Welcome to the Bays

Cricket first. Well… cricket joint first.

Founded by Peter Van Dyke in 1981, the Bays have been playing Sunday and midweek friendlies around Cheltenham for over four decades — plus doing battle in Division 3 of the Cheltenham Indoor League. We make sure cricket is for all, and we play in the Sunday spirit — everyone contributes. Especially in the post-match hydration!

Four decades of the Bays

A Potted History

1981

The Bays are born

Peter Van Dyke founds Bayshill Cricket Club in Cheltenham. A pint is almost certainly involved.

1981

Borrowed threads

Too new to own kit, the fledgling club takes the field in whites generously borrowed from The Retreat. Style: immaculate. Ownership: questionable.

1986

First Isles of Scilly tour

The Bays discover the most beautiful cricket destination in Britain — and promptly make it an annual tradition that endures to this day.

1987

Indoors, out of the rain

The Bays join the Cheltenham Indoor League, where we've been competing (currently Division 3) ever since. Sweatbands optional, enthusiasm mandatory.

2010

The Isle of Man expedition

One legendary tour of the Isle of Man. The cricket was played; the details remain classified.

Today

Still going strong

Sunday friendlies, midweek thrashes, indoor league battles, and a Boxer dog for a president. Come on The Bays!

Score books from 1982 to today

The Bayshill Hall of Fame

Compiled from the club's own score books — by Dylan Thomas (1982-97), Steve Liley (1998-2011) and Steve & Tom Liley since. Where a book wasn't finished, what isn't there can't be counted.

🐾

Every great institution needs firm leadership, and the Bays have it in Winston — a Boxer of impeccable judgement, boundless enthusiasm, and an unrivalled nose for a dropped sausage roll at tea.

Winston personally inspects every team sheet, patrols the boundary with distinction, and has never once lost the toss. His selection policy is simple: if you bring treats, you're in the XI.

“Woof. Woof woof. Come on The Bays.”

No trials. No standards. No, really.

Come & Play for the Bays

Never held a bat? Perfect. Played for years but mostly for the tea? Even better. We're a family-friendly club and every single person is welcome — turn up, say hello, and you'll have a game and a pint sorted by sundown.

📍 Where

We're a nomadic club — no ground of our own, which means every game's an away day. Based in Cheltenham, playing across Gloucestershire and beyond.

🗓️ When

Sunday afternoons, midweek evening thrashes through summer, and indoor league in the colder months.
